Make Your Own Lattice Vessel

ceramic hand building workshop with kai fukunaga

Saturday, July 11, 1pm-3pm

Explore Kai Fukunaga’s unique and meditative approach to clay in this two-hour sculptural vessel workshop.

Inspired by the structure of woven baskets, this process uses small, hand-formed clay dots to build airy, open vessels. As each dot is placed and connected, a lattice emerges, resulting in forms that are both visually striking and functional.

Participants will create two unique vessels while learning how to control spacing, structure, and repetition to achieve strength and balance. The finished pieces echo the look of fiber weaving but are entirely made from clay.

All materials will be provided, including prepared clay and a curated selection of glaze options. The workshop includes a live demonstration along with hands-on guidance from the instructor.

Your piece(s) will be dried, fired, and glazed for you and available for pick-up or delivery 1 month after the class. Shipping requires an additional charge paid at check-in.

Some experience with clay is helpful, but beginners are welcome to explore this alternative hand-building technique.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by a guardian. Minimum student age is 12.

About your instructor - Kai Fukunaga

Kai Fukunaga is a Japanese American ceramic artist whose work explores transformation through slow, accumulative processes. Raised between cultures, her multicultural upbringing continues to shape her understanding of identity as layered and evolving. Intuitively formed into structures through tactile and emotional engagement, her work reflects on the tensions between strength/fragility, presence/absence, and permanence/impermanence. She holds a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University (2025) and a BS in Hotel Administration from Cornell University (2014). In 2024, she was a summer intern at Anderson Ranch Arts Center and currently works as a ceramics intern at Starworks. Fukunaga has exhibited in the United States and the United Kingdom, including at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, The Stradling Collection, Llantarnam Grange, and Bevere Gallery.
