Clay Studio Director - Job Opportunity
The Clay Studio is a valued contributor to the dynamic programming of STARworks, a work-centered arts community bringing creative diversity and local material resource consciousness to a broader community. The duties of the Director of the Clay Studio include overseeing an artist residency program, day-to-day activities in the studio, contributing to annual events, overseeing a small production line of STARworks products, studio equipment technical maintenance, and continuing to develop production and programming for ceramic education, events and exhibitions.
We require a professional with a high degree of attention to detail, entrepreneurial attitude, strong work ethic and discipline. As our studio is open to the public, we require excellent communication and interpersonal skills with individuals on all levels coming into our facilities. Experience in kiln equipment maintenance and technical understanding of clay and glaze materials as well as common administrative and accounting tasks are essential.
The ideal candidate will have experience in a non-profit arts organization; strong interpersonal skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications and Microsoft Excel software; will be familiar with website and social media tools, such as Facebook and Instagram; and will have an ability to organize work flow and multi-task effectively.
Masters degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience
Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, visiting artists, and the general public.
Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently, with reasonable accommodations.
Assist staff in project administration tasks including recruitment correspondence, project planning and grant applications
Provide assistance to the staff in aspects relating to public event planning and educational curriculum for ceramic hands-on experiences, tours, monthly workshops and long-term classes
Prepare Residency information and process Artist in Residence program applications
Oversee housing and transportation needs for all visiting and resident artists
Coordination and processing of hourly staff and residents in the Work Exchange program including training, scheduling, and timesheet logs.
Maintain existing production line productivity and creative ability to develop new lines that will contribute funding for the education and residency programs
Ability to reconcile annual studio budget and the costs and expenses to maintain efficiency and efficacy of programs
Keep track of day-to-day needs of the studio including dry materials, equipment upkeep and maintenance, cleaning supplies, tools, and safety equipment
Experience repairing electric kilns, electric throwing wheels and basic electrical equipment preferred
Help to maintain the studio at a high standard of cleanliness, organization, and hospitality
