Summer Holidays Family Clay Class STARworks Ceramics, a Non Profit Organization located in Star, will have a Family Clay Class for local families this summer. You can make clay objects with experienced instructors. Pots will be fired in several weeks and you can pick up later on. Please sign up in advance. First come, first served. Clay Experience WorkshopThe Clay Experience Workshop is a two-hour class that gives participants the opportunity to make a simple cup or bowl by hand that will serve as a permanent souvenir of their visit to the Seagrove area. The workshop is designed for people with no previous clay or art experience. After the course, the pots will be glazed, fired and returned to the participants by mail or local pickup. This workshop is a great way for visitors to experience the culture of this region from skilled ceramic artists. Reservations are required. Fees: Click here to see photos from previous workshop. Wood Firing WorkshopThe Wood Firing Workshop allows participants to get experience with wood firing of clay work. Our wood kiln is 100 cubic feet with 3 chambers. The first chamber is for Yakishime/ unglazed, the second chamber is for glaze and the third chamber is for salt. You will get a variety of works in a single firing. Participants will have some space in each chamber and total approximately 10 cubic feet. Participants should bring bisqued pots made with clay capable of being fired to cone 10 or hotter. The first two days will involve loading kiln and the last two days will be for firing. Participants are encouraged to join the loading and unloading as well as the firing of the kiln. Takuro Shibata and the STARworks Ceramics staff will lead and assist with the workshop. Fees: Large Bowl/Platter Making Intermediate to Advanced Participants will make large bowl/ platter at least 18 inch width by electric wheel. Instructor gives demonstration, instruction and useful technique for making large pots. You may want to bring some of your personal tools for throwing. Japanese Tea Pot Making Intermediate to Advanced Participants will learn how to make Japanese style teapot by throwing. Atea pot is one of the hardest table wares. The instructor will teach the process to make teapot. There will be a tea break during the class, and participants will taste Japanese green tea. You may want to bring some of your personal tools for throwing. Pots will be taken home with participant after the class. Fees: 4 people/max Click here to see photos from previous workshop. Basic Plaster Mold Making Beginner to Intermediate Participants will learn how to make basic Plaster Mold. It'll be press mold which is basic mold but also most useful tool for ceramic table wares. Because it's long process to make a mold, you might need to prepare some before class and also take home work to be finished up. You may want to bring some of your personal tools for mold making.
